Here at Hemlock Schnauzers our pups are raised in our home with special care for both mom and her pups. We go far beyond to ensure that our pups have a nurturing enviroment while nursing in the care of their mother. Once the pups are weaned I then take over for mom and they are moved to a large pen (not a wire floored cage) where they can play and crate training will begin. They have plenty of room to relieve themselves so that they are always in a clean enviroment. They get plenty of exercise both in their pen and out. We have daily outings for the pups as to slowly introduce them to new things around them.
This is the whelping box with an extention added the pups learn to use the papers and it's easy access for mom to go in with her pups for feedings and care
With the pups being in our home they are watched daily with care, always a radio playing and the sound of the home makes for a well adjusted pup when going to his/her new home.
Pups have an area for play and shavings to relieve themselves
Half crates with burlap bedding for hygeine is the first step to crate training, I will add the top half once they are comfortable with the crate.
They now have the full crate, they will go to their new homes knowing a crate is a place to sleep and it's a safe place to be.
Getting them crate trained before leaving us gives me a sense that the pups get off to a great start in their new homes.
Transition to the bigger pen, blanket and newspapers
They will soon have shavings and play room on the floor.
